Reviews of Jazz CDs with a little information about the artists!

I am the jazz director for KXUA, student run radio at the University of Arkansas. This means that every week, I get anywhere from one to ten cds to listen to, review, and ultimately decide if it gets played and the rotation level - light or heavy.

Most of the time the music isn't very good. Now, I know this is subjective, but I am fairly certain most young students do not want to hear the songs that rocked their grandparents socks off in the thirties, and MOSTLY, I am the same way. But not always.

This week I was handed an unbelievable amount of GREAT music from the Cuneiform label out of Maryland. I can not stress how incredible these albums are, but I will try!

Led Bib - Bring Your Own
Genre: Jazz / Punk Jazz

Two weeks of trying to quantify this album; trying to explain how exquisitely my mind has been pounded from one shape to another, then thrown into the gutter, only to be picked up by a bum who sells me to the recycling center. That’s how incredible these guys are. I need a cigarette, and I don’t smoke. Time to hit play again.

Recommended if you like: John Zorn, Soft Machine, Polar Bear, Acoustic Ladyland, Steve Coleman, Decoding Society, Gutbucket (and who doesn't LOVE Gutbucket!?!?!)

Carlo De Rosa's Cross-Fade - Brain Dance
Genre: Jazz

After days of dirty, dirty jazz, we all need something a little less filthy - but with the direction and power a person needs to seriously cook a meal, while eying up their lover and saying, “Hot DAMN, huh?!” Brain Dance is a cerebral loop-d-loop without seat belts. Pay attention, you don’t those lobes to get minced! Tight, gorgeous and GOOD.Damn it's good.

This video is not from the album, it's just the best of the few youtube videos I found to showcase his skills!
